It Started with Theatre.

Sligo Youth Theatre is where it all began for me, there the seed popped and there I grew my love for acting. Theatre is the lifeblood for the arts and I know that delivering a good performance before a live audience, is a high to which I am addicted. Have a look at my life in Theatre so far.

” I came to this production through an organisation I am a member of in London, The Irish Creative Collective (the ICC). It was at an ICC scratch night that we first performed a scene from this play.

What followed was months of rehearsals culminating in a three night sold out run at the historic Old Red Lion pub theatre in Angel Islington, London.

This production was a joy to be a part of, despite the theme of the play. There was a real sense of collaboration and connection as a cast, regardless of the relationships between our characters. As an actor, Sally (the director) gave me so much space to explore the character, and worked with me to find her strength as the only female character in the play. My first sold out London is one I’m not likely to forget!”

The convent of pleasure

The Convent of Pleasure
Role
Mimic
Director
Hannah Leight and Deepali Foster
Writer
Margaret Cavendish
Year
July 2023
Company
Independent production in association with King’s College London and Shakespeare’s Globe
Synopsis
A queer reimagining of a classical closet drama that tells the story of Lady Happy as she encloisters herself and the rest of her ladies in a ‘Convent of Pleasure’ where they are free from the constraints of men and society.

” This was my theatre debut in London! And what a show to be a part of! I stumbled upon the auditions for this production through social media, and having only just moved to London I was eager to get stuck into work here. This ended up being a very enjoyable production to be a part of, full of laughter and lovely people.

Mimic was a lawless character within the comedy that endlessly played with the fourth wall, and really allowed me to stretch my legs in terms of physical comedy and clowning. The freedom that comes with such a role that exists more or less outside of the narrative allowed me to really explore and develop the character as an actor, in a way I usually wouldn’t get to.

‘The Convent of Pleasure’ revitalised my love for theatre and was the perfect way to start my time in London.”

National Youth theatre of GB

” I successfully auditioned for the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain (NYT) when I was fourteen years old. That summer I spent two weeks living in London doing my intake course for NYT at Goldsmiths University. I often regard those two weeks as a turning point in my personal and professional development.

NYT opened my mind up to the opportunities outside of where I lived and it was around this time I resolved to move to London when I left school. Since then I’m delighted to say I have had many more wonderful experiences and opportunities within the NYT community and have made life long friends. I am very proud to be a National Youth Theatre company member.”

Production theatre

“My introduction to the world of production came during my teenage years through a secondary school work experience program. I spent a week at the Wardrobe Theatre in Bristol and two weeks at my local venue, The Hawkswell Theatre in Sligo. These initial experiences laid the foundation for my subsequent involvement with the Hawkswell Theatre in various paid production roles.

Working behind the scenes, primarily as a stage manager, provided invaluable insights that enriched both my acting skills and overall approach to theatre. Gaining an understanding of what goes on behind the scenes brought new meaning to the idea of ‘the ensemble’ in theatre, and undoubtably changed the way I approach a theatre show as an actor.

Moreover, my involvement in production theatre broke down the idea of being confined to a single role within the industry. I discovered my capacity to write, direct, produce, and contribute in multifaceted ways, ensuring that I remain open to a range of opportunities in the ever-evolving landscape of theatre.”

Sligo Youth theatre

“I will always credit my local youth theatre for giving me my passion and drive for acting. I began there under the tutelage of Jean Marie Perinetti at the age of ten, and stayed for almost eight years. Sligo Youth theatre is the home of many of my formative experiences, not just in the world of acting and theatre, but in my personal development as well.

Over my time at Sligo Youth theatre I developed my process, exploring the world of theatre through improv, movement and a host of different theatrical practices. Undoubtedly it was my Youth theatre that gave me the foundations on which my accomplishments are built.”
